As a large gathering of bikers started riding out into the Austin, TX sunset on Father’s Day weekend, a scarier lot descended unto the famous 6th Street strip: Web hosting providers!
Hundreds of hosters, cloudies and IT industry types did their best to ‘Keep Austin Weird’ as well as informed at the annual HostingCon reunion on June 17-19, which featured more than 50 educational sessions dedicated to market trends, technological innovations and just plain old Web hosting tips.
It was the second of nine HostingCon conferences held in the Texan capital and while the event organizers praised the prized venue, they beamed at the opportunity to host the 10th event in Miami, Florida.
“Miami is a fantastic city, and people are getting excited, ” reiterated Kevin Gold, VP of Marketing at iNet. “We’re looking at doing some special things next year – stay tuned.”
That means there will be bigger parties to rival the rollicking SoftLayer/cPanel bash held at Maggie Mae’s on June 17th and the several others that followed suit to keep everyone’s networking juices flowing and whistles wet.
That’s not to say there weren’t lessons to be learned, partnerships to be cultivated or markets to be researched.
“With Internet adoption growing from 14 percent in 1995 to 80 percent in 2011…and instant access to information now a reality, business has changed. You have to keep changing to stay relevant, ” urged Max Wessel, Business Innovation Leader at SAP North America, who keynoted the event.
While Wessel encouraged all business owners to embrace change, he was adamant that businesses compete where they can win and integrate around what is required to get the job done.
That insight was not wasted on leading hosting providers like SingleHop, which recently expanded to Amsterdam and continues to look for further expansion opportunities in Europe, South America and possibly Hong Kong, said co-founder and CMO, Dan Ushman.
“Business is great. We’re experiencing 35 percent growth year over year and our reseller program is taking off. We now have 2, 500 reseller partners and 10 percent of those wins were acquired in the last two quarters, ” Ushman added.
Those sentiments were echoed by Leaseweb’s VP of Sales, Keren Rubenstein and Evoswitch’s Sales Director, Jasper Lankhorst, a 30-year veteran in data center operations.
“Leaseweb was the first European player to move to the US…there continues to be strong potential in Europe but we have to go where our customers want us to be. It’s all about data. We’re there to protect it, connect it and give our customers the access they need.”
Lankhorst indicates that Leaseweb is now in research mode for data center space in California, guided by customer need.
“It’s basically how long customers are willing to wait for a site to load, 1 millisecond, 5 milliseconds. Connectivity is the main issue and Leaseweb will reduce the distance that data has to travel with our new CDN (Content Delivery Network), ” noted Rubenstein.
Perhaps the most vivid demonstration of expansion lies with the recent moves of cloud enabler, Parallels. The company started operations in Africa recently to take advantage of the SME cloud market there valued at $1.6 billion now, and leaping to $4.1 billion in three years. Furthermore, Parallels research finds that six million SMBs worldwide secured cloud services in 2012, which bodes well for hosting companies looking to add to or even start building a cloud portfolio.
Adam Bogobowicz, Sr. Director of Product Marketing at Parallels notes, “We see higher growth in delivering cloud services across the spectrum. Initially single server services like Plesk to deliver websites are the norm and as businesses grow, advanced Plesk automation solutions requiring five instances, for example, are relatively common.”
We all hope the common denominator of good times and actionable information awaits us again in sunny Miami, next June.
